Since October 2015, businesses without an EMV terminal or POS system are responsible for chargebacks and fraudulent card acceptance. Remember, this only applies when an EMV/chip card is presented at your restaurant or business.
What does this mean to me?
If your business doesn’t have an EMV terminal, you can follow all the rules: check ID, get a signature, swipe the card, etc. and may end up with a chargeback. This is because if it is an EMV/chip card and it is disputed, you will be liable for those charges.
